Do I actually need an HR department?

Once your team reaches 10 or more employees, people issues can start taking up more of your time. But does that mean you need a full-time HR manager?

You don’t need a big HR team

For many small businesses, a full-time HR department simply doesn’t make sense. You might only need HR support a few hours a month. Or perhaps you need more help during a period of growth or when you have a difficult employee situation.

HR doesn’t have to mean bureaucracy

Good HR should make running your business easier. It shouldn’t mean endless paperwork or complicated processes that nobody uses. The right approach should be proportionate to your business. You need the things that matter. And you need to understand them.

Outsourced HR can be a good middle ground

An HR consultant can give you access to experienced HR support without employing a full-time HR manager. You can get help when you need it. That might be ongoing support. Or it might simply be a conversation about a particular issue. For many small businesses, that’s enough.

Agree what needs to happen next

Once you’ve talked about the problem, be clear about what improvement looks like. Set realistic expectations. Agree what support is needed. And keep checking in. Good performance management isn’t about catching people out, it’s about giving people a fair opportunity to improve.

You don’t have to do everything yourself

Running a business already means wearing enough hats. You don’t need to become an HR expert as well. Having someone you can call when an employee issue comes up can give you the advice and confidence to deal with it properly.
